Alder is a relatively recent addition to the mix as far as cabinetry goes. It started being used for furniture in the midwest in the early 2000’s, and has grown in popularity ever since.
Alder is a very hard wood with a tight grain. It is quite knotty, providing a rustic look, and equivalent in pricing to cherry. If you like the rustic look but want a more economical choice, hickory cabinets are less expensive and have more color variation and a heavier grain similar to oak.
